We’ve had a busy few weeks: Nette and I performed with Way Out West at the Teddington Jazz Festival. This was a great undertaking by Ken Richman who curated the festival and made it an amazing success. The only slight difficulty was that the generator packed up in our set – you can see how we dealt with it here.

We also did a lovely Mingus Tribute at Jazz Cafe Posk. Here are a few clips:

Gigs at the Drayton Court Hotel are going well and are happening on the third Wednesday of the month.
I’ll be there with my own band – the Tony Woods Project – on 17th September with special guest Chris Allard on guitar.

Chippings From The Woods Shed:

One thing I like to practise is to limit my range – it makes one more imaginative, breaks one out of habits, makes one think rhythmically…
See if you can just play in the lower octave, or even just work within a 5th as Joe Levano demonstrates in the book “Sax Lessons with the Greats” published by Manhattan Music.
Or just play with your left hand. If you play D with the palm key you can get a range of a 5th. Dave Pollack has obviously practised this a lot as he manages to play Giant Steps with his left hand whilst bouncing a golf ball on a golf club with his right – has to be seen to be believed!
