January often seems to be a bit “gig light” but its a good opportunity to think about the year ahead and make plans – I’m hoping to release a new album with the Tony Woods Project “Into the Ether” and another album of songs – settings of poetry with my wife Nette.

For me jazz improvisation is all about telling a story and melodic development. Melody is about pitch but also about rhythm. To develop different melodic ideas try starting phrases on different beats of the bar, and on the half beats. Literally count yourself in – the results may surprise you…
