We had a lovely time in September – Nette and I did some great gigs with Meredith White on piano as the Lyrik Trio. We even got to spend some time with my brother and his wife in Brecon, as one of the gigs took us to South Wales. There are various clips from the Lyrik Trio on Nette’s Youtube Channel. Here is Silence.

My band was also out and about in September – here we are at the Milford Arms playing the standard What is the Thing Called Love
And here we are at the Way Out West gig at the Drayton Court Hotel playing one of my tunes Igneous Rock.

November is going to be a busy month: there’s a tribute to the late great Eddie Harvey (one of the founder members of Way Out West) on the 15th, and Way Out West will be doing a special concert as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival on the 23rd November at the Drayton Court Hotel venue entitled “The Train and the River.” The collective will take you on a musical journey of instrumental and vocal music on the theme of trains and rivers. Expect inventive arrangements of familiar classics, unusual material and unexpected gems.

After that Nette and I will be joined by pianist Terrence Collie for a concert of Russian songs at Swedenborg House, Holborn on 29th November.

And the month rounds off with the epic NTJO (The Nette and Tony Jazz Orchestra) performing a programme of my tunes at the Hampton Hub on the 30th November.

I’ll need a lie down after all that…

Chippings From The Woods Shed:

I’ve been listening to Stan Getz a bit recently and he manages to create a great sense of spaciousness, not just from leaving space but by use of long notes.
So try starting a phrase with a long note – it might set you off in a different direction. Really listen to your sound and enjoy it! If you play an instrument where the sound decays just play the note and listen to it die away.
Then try finishing a phrase with a long note – it’s so nice when you find a good note to stop on (Miles and Coltrane again).
Then try landing on long notes in the middle of a phrase to give it shape.
